One of my favourite elements of storytelling is characterization. It's the most natural part of writing for me, I think.. And it's even more rewarding when critique partners identify with the characters and can't wait to read the next chapter.
I've been sitting on a young adult series for a few years now and believe it's time to do something about these books. I entered the first two in a local creative writing competition and both won medals.
Why do something about them now?
I have no compelling arguments other than the fact that since I've gotten a ton of good and useful feedback, now is as good a time as any. It's weird that the first novel I wrote was Young Adult fiction, but I haven't yet been published in this genre, except for short stories in a local paper.
The series I'm working on involves siblings from a broken home. Though separated, they are still able to visit with each other. Their adventures are varied, but interesting (if I do say so myself), but self praise is no recommendation.
There's still some editing to get through, but I've set myself a target for the end of 2012, so stay tuned.
What about you? Have you ever thought about writing young adult fiction and if not, are there convincing reasons why you shouldn't? If you do write young adult fiction, are you published yet and if not, what d'you plan to do about it?
